Byron Smith
Byron Smith started his musical journey with the piano at the age of 6. At the age of 8 he moved from South Africa to New Zealand where he started to learn the trumpet aged 9 at the Bays Music Centre (BMCI). A year later he started playing alto saxophone. He completed his three years of saxophone at BMCI and went on to Rangitoto College where he was in jazz combos and Big bands including 3 years in the KBB festival’s winning Big Band. He has studied under some awesome tutors, including Julie Mason, a well-known member of Auckland’s jazz scene. He is currently studying engineering at Auckland University. Byron likes to lead his church band on the sax and is also a member of the Down Beat Big Band.
