Cheryl Tong
Cheryl Tong is an experienced music tutor, having started teaching in 1983 while still a student. Upon her graduation from the University of Southern California, she co-founded a music business in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. For more than a decade, she managed the centre, a licensee of Yamaha Music, and together with her team of dedicated teachers, taught hundreds of students collectively over the years, preparing them for both public performances and music examinations.
In Kuala Lumpur, she assisted Michael Veerapen, one of Malaysia's top musicians, in his work as Music Director at a local church for several years. Over the years, she has also played for Hosanna! Music worship leaders from the U.S. In addition, she and her husband have spoken at seminars and conferences, and played at live concerts throughout the region. They have directed worship teams comprising of musicians and singers, providing advice and counsel to music departments of churches, and training that both equipped and motivated worship team band members.
Cheryl moved to New Zealand over eight years ago, and resides in Auckland with her husband and three active sons. As a family, they play a variety of instruments – saxophone, cello, flute, violin, French horn, guitar, drums and piano. Aside from teaching at Bays Music Centre as well as privately, Cheryl can be found keeping TheBoyz out of mischief, band-aiding skinned knees, or running away from pet spiders …
